A New Instrument

Call me a dork, but I'm always intrigued by how instruments change over time and across cultures. Last summer while in Heidelberg, Germany, we heard a mesmerizing new instrument.

The instrument originated in the Caribbean, where it was a steel drum. The Swiss inverted the shape, made some adjustments, and created the Hang.

If you've never seen Steel Drums, check out this video I found on YouTube:

What do you think is similar between these instruments? What differences do you hear and see?

  1. Hi Ms.Karissa! This is Danae again. When are you coming back? I am 11 now. In music we are learning to play string instruments. Everyone still misses you.

  2. Hi Ms.Karissa! This is Danae Kirby. I am the only one who visits this site anymore, and you porbably don't visit it either. But I am certainly not the only one who remembers you. We all dislike Mrs. Cheryl very much compared to you. We all miss you terribly and wish you were still teaching music here. Are you ever going to visit us? I am almost 12 now, and I'm in Mrs. Michelle's class. Mrs. Michelle is pregnant! Her baby Alexander is supposed to be born in February. I hope you see this message.

    Your old student,
    Danae.

  3. Hi, Danae,
It is really nice to hear from you! I will admit, I stopped adding to the site because I suspected not many people were visiting. Every time you write, though, I get an email! I am back in Colorado again, and would love to visit REMS and say hello. I miss you guys! I think I'm working when you're at school (I'm teaching close to Denver) but maybe there will be a day soon when I don't work, and you're at school! I'm excited that Mrs. Michelle is pregnant; she's going to be a wonderful mommy. I bet you will miss her when she's gone.

I hope you have a HAPPY Christmas!
    Hugs, Miss Karissa

  4. Thankyou! Merry Christmas to you too! We just got off for Christmas break. I hope you can come sometime in January when we are back in school. I know everyone would love to see you! I think you were here when Mrs. Michelle was pregnant with Genevieve. She is 2 yrs. old now, and is so cute! Genevieve is excited for Alexander to be born too.

Hope to see you soon, and merry Christmas!

    Danae
